Article: HK people hope to put aside political disputes
The Hong Kong government has accused the opposition pan-democrats of voting against the wishes of the majority of Hong Kong’s people.
Many are now saying they hope politicians will put aside differences and concentrate on the economy and other social issues in the following years.
June 18th was a black day for the majority of Hong Kong residents, who had hoped to elect the chief executive in 2017 by universal suffrage.
As the SAR government’s proposal was voted down in the legislature, it’s uncertain when the people will have the opportunity to vote for their leader. The Hong Kong SAR government criticized the pan-democrats and said they should be held responsible.
Some experts also urged the opposition camp to stop misleading its supporters into believing that they can achieve the sort of universal suffrage that is not in line with the Basic Law and the decisions of the NPC Standing Committee.
“They (the pan-democrats) do not accept ‘one country, two systems’ and the Basic Law. Any democratic development must comply with the Basic Law. According to the Basic Law, the central government has a role to play in Hong Kong’s political reform,” said Elsie Leung, deputy director of HKSAR Basic Law Committee.
Meanwhile, some observers say rejection of the bill also forces people to reconsider whether it’s the best time for Hong Kong to make constitutional reforms.
Even 18 years after Hong Kong’s return to China, there are still a number of people in the city, especially the young, that lack a sense of national identity. Analysts say there’s a pressing need to establish a platform to strengthen communication and narrow the political disagreements in society.
“The disagreement on political idea will continue, maybe for a very long time. We have to manage the disagreement in a manageable and reasonable form. So that disagreement will not have harmful effect to other aspects, like economy and social development,” said Simon-Hoey Lee, member of HK Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee.
Disputes over electoral reform have dragged on in Hong Kong for years. There are worries that if they continue, it will further strain the city’s overall business environment.
“All Hong Kong people are losers in this. Commerce and industry is very worried about the political disputes continuing. After the Occupy Central movement, the tourism and retail industries were hit severely.”
“The businesses of many shops are gloomy. We hope all sides can calm down, and put more efforts into economic development and people’s livelihoods,” said Lee Yuk Lun, president of HK Commerce & Industry Associations.
Failing to pass the reform keeps Hong Kong at a standstill. The SAR government said it will not re-launch the issue of constitutional reform before 2017.
The electoral package has been vetoed, but the disputes concerning constitutional reform have not ended. Analysts say it’s time to put aside the political disputes, because the divided city needs to heal, and a lot of other pressing issues need to be resolved.
